HTC Hero Messaging glitch and how to fix it.

Tips & Tricks | Sunday October 18 2009 10:44 pm | Comments (0)

There is a problem with the MESSAGE application on the Sprint HTC Hero Phone. The application fails to release it’s connection from the network and keeps the CPU running, which drains the battery faster. While it appears as an HTC Hero Battery issue, the real problem is an application that refuses to sleep.

The FIX

1. From the Android Market, download “Handcent”, which is a free SMS application. I recommend since I use it, it’s skinnable, and does “speech to text” for your SMS… which is pretty handy!!

2. Disable the Message applications notifications.

  1. Go to All Programs
  2. Choose  ”Messages
  3. Press the “Menu” button
  4. In “Settings” Uncheck AUTO-RETRIEVE and uncheck NOTIFICATIONS.

Hero

The UK’s Daily Mail reports that the HTC Hero was voted Best Gadget of 2009 at the 2009 “Stuff Gadget Awards”, beating the iPhone 3Gs.

Fraser Macdonald, Stuff’s expert judge and Editor, stated

‘With the HTC Hero, we’ve finally got a phone that fully exploits the potential of the Android OS to be as clever and as sexy as the iPhone.’

The annual Stuff Gadget Awards reviews the best of consumer technology, and has a panel of expert judges.

To be fair, tho, the iPhone 3Gs was awarded the ‘Phone of the Year’ award.

How to make a million as an Android developer

Apps | Sunday October 4 2009 9:33 am | Comments (0)

androidlogoWe’ve all heard stories of iPhone developers swimming in cash. Apple makes flashy commercials highlighting cool applications (”There’s an app for that”) and everybody makes money.

Almost.

Is it not easy to become an iPhone developer. You have to jump thru Apple’s hoops, program in Objective C, there is a long wait before it appears in the App Store, and even then, you DO have to market it.

The Android market could be much larger, as Android is being rolled out onto both phones and portable computer devices, like the Archos 5 Internet Tablet. Of course, now you have jump thru Google’s hoops, program in Java and, yes Virginia, you still have to market it.

NOW the Android market is a fledging market but early developers will be richly rewarded, just as early iPhone developers were. As more phones are being added, market share will increase.

Apple currently enjoys 30% of the “smart phone” business, with Blackberry controlling 39% . But as users move away from “regular phones” into smart phones, they will have only three choices: iPhone, Android or Blackberry.

Carriers can sell Android with much lower costs, and there will be a surge of users to the Android platform over the next two years. This gives you time to code up your app now, test it and release it.

Android vs iPhone/iPod Touch

Android iPhone iPod Touch

Average Monthly Spending $8.63 $9.49 $9.79
August 2009 Market $ 5 mil $ 125 mil $ 73 mil
